An Ad for Gus Marx
Gus Marx died April 14th at the age of 77.
He was the father of the advertising business
in Milwaukee.
He was the one we all came to
for help, good advice, a couple of laughs,
and usually a free lunch.
He helped many of us start on our own,
and in many cases, to become his competitor.
He enjoyed what he did and he did it well.
He enjoyed our success as much as his own.
He would always assure us
that many good things would come to us
as they had come to him.
For us it will.
For him it has.

Established in 1920
For more than 80 years, the Marx family has been on the cutting edge of marketing, advertising, and broadcast communications in Milwaukee.
In 1920, the grandfather of today’s principals-- David and Bob Marx —established the Gustav Marx Advertising Agency. Gustav was an advertising pioneer working in print and recording some of the world’s very first “paid announcements” for businesses that aired live during local radio broadcasts. When he died in 1972 this full page tribute by his friends and peers ran on the third page of the Milwaukee Journal (right).
As the world of broadcast communications evolved, so did Marx. Gustav's son, Duke, became one of this country's advertising authorities on using radio and television to promote retail department stores. He wrote singing commercials and produced thousands of TV spots and industrial films. To aid in the process, in 1968, Marx Advertising built one of the Midwest's finest production studios.
In the late 1970s, Bob and David joined the staff, enriching the company with a diverse range of creative and technical talents. In the last 30 years we have expanded our marketing and communication services to include television programming, live satellite broadcasts, Internet and DVD distribution, as well as In-Store electronic signage and private retail networks.
By reinventing itself daily, Marx continually creates a new agency to fit each client’s specific needs, using the latest technologies so that they work for clients, not the other way around.
